The breeding method of Mahonia

The breeding method of Mahonia

Seed propagation

When: Usually, we choose March.

Specific method: Prepare the soil, then sow the seeds, cover them with about one to two centimeters of soil, water them thoroughly, and place them in a semi-shaded place. Wait for about a month for them to germinate. Note that the suitable temperature for seeds to germinate is about fifteen to twenty-five degrees Celsius. The seedlings grown that year can grow to about eight to ten centimeters, and some anti-cold measures need to be taken in winter. After leaving the plant in the bed for another year, it can be transplanted the following year. Generally speaking, it takes four to five years to bloom and bear fruit.

Cutting propagation

Time: Hard branches are usually done from February to March, while tender branches are slightly different, usually around the time of the plum rains.

Specific method: For hard branches, we can choose one to two year old sturdy branches, insert them into sandy soil, and ensure sufficient water. In May, we should start to put up a shed to provide shade for it, and on sunny days we should also spray the soil to keep the air moist. If you continue like this for about two months, it will take root. For tender branches, you should choose fuller branches, and the temperature should be controlled between 23 and 30 degrees. If the conditions are right, roots will grow in about a month, and the survival rate is relatively high.

Propagation by division

When: mid-October to mid-November or late February to late March.

Specific method: Dig out the entire plant planted in the ground, or take a larger plant out of the pot, and then cut it open from the place where the root and stem are weakly connected. Each part should have several stems and some roots. Then, make some minor adjustments to the leaves and you can plant them.
