How to propagate potted grapefruit

How to propagate potted grapefruit

1. Seed propagation method

The plump fruit core of pomelo can grow and germinate through sowing under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, and can also grow into a pomelo tree. But generally speaking, potted grapefruit trees grown from self-seeding are only suitable for viewing. As for flowering and fruiting, more careful care is required.

2. Layering propagation method

When the spring buds of grapefruit sprout in May, the two to three-year-old branches that have grown thicker can be ring-peeled and the substrate can be wrapped with film to the peeling area. Keep the substrate at a relatively moist state. After about one and a half to two months, roots will grow at the peeled area.

3. Cutting propagation method

For potted grapefruit trees, cuttings are a more commonly used method. Give priority to plants that are about 8 to 12 cm long, semi-lignified, and preferably have terminal buds. It would be even better if they are a little sturdier. When dealing with cuttings, half of the leaves on the branch should be removed, leaving two to three leaves on the top. When taking cuttings, you should choose the rainy season when the temperature is suitable and the humidity is high. After cuttings, pay attention to maintaining the temperature and humidity of the substrate in the pot. Generally, the temperature should be controlled between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, and the humidity should be around 50 percent. At the same time, be careful not to overdo the light intensity. Roots will generally grow about two months after cuttings.

4. Grafting propagation method

Grafting is also a commonly used method for potted grapefruit trees. It can be done by branch grafting or bud grafting. Generally speaking, it is more appropriate to carry out branch grafting before the spring buds of grapefruit sprout, while bud grafting is better to carry out during its growth period. When it comes to choosing rootstocks, there are many types to choose from. Generally, you can choose sour orange or citrus fruit, which have strong adaptability.
