Cultivation methods and precautions of the colorful iron tree

Cultivation methods and precautions of the colorful iron tree

The colorful iron tree is a perennial evergreen shrub of the Agavaceae family and the genus Cordyline . Its leaves are brightly colored, slender and flowing, like many rainbows, with unique charm. It is a very popular indoor ornamental plant. So what are the cultivation methods and precautions of the seven-colored iron tree? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Soil selection

The rainbow cycad likes to grow in loose, breathable, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy loam rich in humus. The potting soil can be prepared by mixing leaf mold, river sand and perlite.

2. Light temperature

The rainbow cycad prefers a sunny environment, but needs partial shade in summer to avoid leaf burn. The suitable growth temperature is 15-20℃, and it should not be lower than 10℃ in winter to avoid frost damage.

3. Watering tips

Water regularly during the growing season to keep the soil moist. But do not water too much to avoid water accumulation. Generally, wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Reduce watering during the cold autumn and winter seasons, and always maintain the principle of watering when the soil is dry and wet.

4. Reasonable fertilization

Between March and September, liquid fertilizer should be applied to the rainbow cycad once a month. Liquid fertilizer can be applied frequently in summer, and ferrous sulfate solution can be added to it to promote dark green leaves.

5. Reproduction method

The colorful iron tree can be propagated by sowing or burying the stems. Sowing is done in May-June, covered with 2-3 cm of soil, and germinated in about two weeks at 30-33℃. The buried stem propagation method is to cut the stems into sections and bury them in moist sandy soil, maintaining a water content of about 60%. New buds will sprout after half a year.

6. Notes

(1) When caring for the iron tree, good ventilation should be maintained to prevent the occurrence of pests and diseases such as scale insects.

(2) The rainbow tree likes a humid environment. You should often spray water mist around the plant to increase the humidity of the surrounding environment.

(3) Pay attention to timely pruning of overly long branches and leaves to promote the sprouting of side branches and maintain a beautiful plant shape. However, the leaves of the iron tree have serrations on the edges, so you should wear gloves when pruning to avoid scratches.

(4) It is recommended to change the pot every spring before the new leaves grow to avoid soil compaction.

In general, it is not difficult to cultivate the rainbow dracaena. By following the management of soil, temperature, light, water and fertilizer, the rainbow dracaena can grow healthily and maintain a good ornamental state.
