How to Propagate Ginseng

Seed treatment

Unlike other plants, ginseng seeds have incomplete embryonic development. The embryos of newly harvested seeds are very small and difficult to see with the naked eye. Therefore, ginseng needs to be germinated in both spring and autumn.

The specific method is to mix the ginseng seeds with wet sand, store them in a moisturizing condition of 12 to 20 degrees day and night temperature change for 3 to 4 months, and wait for the seeds to crack. This process is called morphological after-ripening. After that, the seeds are stored at a low temperature of about 5 degrees for another 2 to 3 months. After the physiological after-ripening period is completed, the seeds can germinate.

sowing

Northeast China is the main ginseng producing area. In places with warm climates, seeds can be sown after being collected in July. After being processed at natural temperature, the seeds will germinate normally in the second year. In cold climates, the temperature is too low for the seeds to complete two ripening periods, so they must wait until the second year for summer sowing, and they will not germinate normally until the third year.

Transplanting

Jilin is an important ginseng producing area in my country. Due to differences in soil and climate conditions in the planting areas, Jilin's ginseng producing areas are divided into two categories, one is the border ginseng area, and the other is the ordinary ginseng area, and the planting methods of the two are different.

Ordinary ginseng area: basically, transplanting is done after three years and harvesting is done after six years. This transplanting method is called the three-three cultivation method.

Border ginseng area: This kind of border ginseng is transplanted at three years old, and then transplanted again at five years old. Each seedling grows for two years before being harvested, so it is harvested at seven years. This ginseng planting system is called the three-two-two system.
