the difference

Differentiation in appearance

After careful observation, we will find that although they are very similar in appearance, there are still some subtle differences. For example, the widest part of the leaves of sweet olive is usually below the middle of the petiole, and the leaves become more pointed as they go upwards. Then let's take a look at the leaves of Osmanthus fragrans. The widest part of the leaves is close to the tip of the leaf. The shape of the tip of the leaf is either round or pointed. A closer look at the fruits of the other two plants also reveals some clues. The fruits of Osmanthus fragrans are roughly round. After identifying the fruit of the sweet olive, we found that it is roughly oval in shape. The hedges and bonsai we see in daily life are mostly made of Osmanthus fragrans. In addition, the flowers of sweet olive may be larger. Both plants belong to the Rutaceae family, so it is understandable that it is not easy to tell them apart.

Differentiate by geographical distribution

Osmanthus fragrans is mostly distributed in sandy soil near the sea. It likes sunlight and can tolerate dry and hot temperatures. The sweet olive grows in inland mountains and forests, and its habits are different from those of the sweet olive. The sweet olive prefers moist places and is more shade-tolerant. There are more sweet olives in Taiwan, otherwise how could there be Jay Chou’s sweet olives!
