How to propagate Berberis rubra

There are three ways to propagate Berberis vulgaris: sowing, cuttings, and division.

sowing

Purple-leafed barberry is native to Japan and is now produced in Zhejiang, Anhui and other places in China, and is grown in almost all northern cities. Collect seeds in autumn, remove the pulp, dry in the shade, then store the seeds and sand in a high and dry pit in proportion. Take out the seeds in the spring of the second year and start sowing. In addition to spring sowing, it can also be sown in autumn after collection.

Cuttings

There are two ways to propagate Berberis vulgaris by cuttings. One is hard branch cuttings, and the other is soft branch cuttings. The suitable time for cuttings is June and July in summer. Choose semi-lignified branches for pruning. After pruning, insert them in sand or gravel. During this period, pay attention to maintaining humidity and temperature. Roots will grow in more than half a month. In autumn, choose branches with better growth as cuttings. The cutting method is the same as in summer, and the transplanting can be carried out in the spring of the following year.

Division

Purple-leafed Berberis has a strong growth ability, so division propagation is also a good method. The division season is not suitable except in summer, but other times can be used. The clumping plants are propagated by division.
