Red Cloud Crape Myrtle Cuttings

There are two ways to propagate Hongyun Crape Myrtle: hard branch cuttings and soft branch cuttings. Hard branch cuttings are chosen from late March to early April, and soft branch cuttings are done in early to mid-June in summer. For cuttings, choose one-year-old branches that are strong, fully lignified, and free of pests and diseases.

Cutting of Red Cloud Crape Myrtle

To increase the survival rate of cuttings, soak the cuttings in water 6 to 8 days before cuttings, and remember to change the water every day. When irregular nodules are evident at the incision, cuttings should be taken. You can soak the cuttings in sugar water for 24 hours, which can significantly improve the survival rate. When grafting, prepare the soil, apply enough base fertilizer, make the soil loose and have sufficient water. First use tools to make a hole, insert the cuttings into the hole, then seal the hole and tamp it down. The cutting depth should be 2/3 of the length of the cutting. The plant spacing should be 10 cm and the row spacing should be 15 cm. Water thoroughly after planting and roots will grow in about a month.

Management of Red Cloud Crape Myrtle after Planting

After the cuttings are completed, cover the cutting box with plastic film and shade it with a shade net. After the cuttings have taken root, gradually remove the covering in batches. After cutting, keep the cutting box moist, and irrigate with clean water during the seedling stage until the water penetrates the cutting box. Generally, water once every 3 to 5 days. Fertilizer can be applied 40 days after cuttings.
