How to propagate African ice grass

How to propagate African ice grass

Seed propagation

Seed Soaking

Because the seeds of African ice grass are extremely small, they need to be soaked and germinated before sowing. The specific operation is as follows: first place the seeds in warm water at about 20-30℃ and soak them for about 2-4 hours before sowing.

On Demand

Careful cultivation management is required when sowing and raising seedlings. First, sow an African ice grass seed in the seedling tray, or you can sow 3 seeds at a time at 9 cm intervals. Because the seeds of ice plant are relatively small, covering them with too thick soil will affect their germination, so just cover them lightly with a layer of soil. In order to make them germinate better, it is necessary to control the temperature management after sowing, which should be around 20℃. An insulated box needs to be used during low temperature periods. If sowing and cultivation are carried out in autumn, the high temperature may sometimes affect the germination rate, resulting in a decrease in the germination rate. Note that the nursery room should be kept ventilated at all times to lower the temperature of the nursery environment.

Colonization

It depends on the cultivation period. Usually, ice plant seeds can be transplanted about 20-40 days after sowing, when 4-5 leaves grow. There are different cultivation methods according to different cultivation areas. Direct seeding can also be carried out in some places, and seedling transplanting can improve the quality of the plants. When cultivating during low temperature periods, a layer of white plastic film needs to be covered. When cultivating during high temperature periods, ventilation and cooling must be done well.

Harvest

When harvesting African ice grass, you should use scissors to spread it radially, mainly harvesting the side branches about two months after sowing. In addition, it should be stored at low temperatures during transportation, or transported in the early morning when the temperature is low, and pre-cooling is required after harvesting.
