How to fertilize and water your fern

Fertilization cycle of Nephrolepis

Firstly, the kidney fern has strong vitality, and secondly, it consumes little nutrients. Sometimes it will still remain green even without watering or fertilizing for many days. Therefore, many flower lovers think that the kidney fern does not need to be fertilized. However, this idea is wrong. Not only does the kidney fern need to be fertilized, but it also needs to be fertilized once every half a month. Winter is an exception. In winter, the kidney fern does not grow vigorously, so it can be fertilized once one to two months.

Fern fertilizer ingredients

The fertilizer component of kidney fern is mainly nitrogen fertilizer, and it is dilute nitrogen fertilizer. This is why kidney fern is fertilized once every half a month. The dilute nitrogen fertilizer is easily consumed. Too high nutrient content will also affect the normal growth of the kidney fern, and may even cause fertilizer damage to the kidney fern, causing it to be burned to death due to excessive fertilizer.

Watering tips for kidney fern

Keep the soil moist and water frequently in small amounts. The temperature is high in the summer and water evaporates easily, so water two to three times a day on average, and avoid watering at noon (watering at noon in summer will damage the stomata of the kidney fern). Generally, water in the morning and evening, with watering mainly in the morning. The amount and frequency of watering in winter can be reduced appropriately. Firstly, the temperature is lower in winter and water evaporates very little. Secondly, the growth of kidney ferns in winter is not as vigorous as in spring and summer, and the demand for water is not much. However, it is necessary to keep it growing in a moist and cool environment, and avoid watering in the evening. If the amount of water is not controlled well during watering in the evening, it is easy to freeze at night, affecting the normal growth of kidney ferns.
