How should succulents be watered?

Succulent plants are small and do not take up space. They look very beautiful when they grow. Most people who like to grow flowers will grow a few pots of succulents. However, succulents grown indoors are prone to root rot, leaf rot, and black rot. Most of the reasons are caused by improper watering. So how should succulents be watered? Let’s take a look below.

1. Characteristics of succulent plants

Succulents usually have thick leaves and stems, which are able to store water in dry environments and are highly drought-tolerant. These characteristics make succulents more drought-tolerant than other plants and more sensitive to overwatering.

2. Factors affecting watering requirements

(1) Season and climate: The watering requirements of succulents are affected by the season and climate. During the hot summer months, succulents may need more frequent watering, while during the cool winter months, watering can be less frequent.

(2) Light and temperature: Light and temperature will also affect the evaporation rate of water in succulents. In an environment with strong light and high temperatures, succulents evaporate water faster and may need more watering.

(3) Soil conditions: Succulents usually grow in loose, well-drained soil. Overwatering can cause the soil to be too wet, increasing the risk of root rot. Therefore, soil drainage is one of the important factors in determining the amount of watering.

3. Watering method

(1) Thorough watering versus superficial watering: Succulents generally do not need to be watered thoroughly every time. Overwatering can cause root rot and poor plant growth. In contrast, superficial watering is a common watering method that involves pouring the right amount of water evenly on the soil surface.

(2) Observe the condition of the plants: the frequency and amount of watering should be adjusted according to the condition of the plants. Check the leaves and stems of the plant regularly; if they become limp or show signs of shrinking, it may be a sign that watering is needed.

(3) Spray watering: For some succulents that are particularly drought-resistant, you can use a sprayer to evenly spray water mist on the plants to provide an appropriate amount of moisture.

4. Notes

(1) Suitable growth environment for succulents: Succulents prefer bright sunlight, but need to avoid exposure to strong sunlight during the hot summer. They also prefer dry conditions, so good air circulation is important for the growth of succulents.

(2) How to determine the right time to water: Before watering, you can use a hygrometer or gently insert your finger into the soil to determine the moisture content of the soil. If the soil surface feels dry, but the underlying soil is still moist, then watering may not be necessary right away.

(3) Differences among varieties: Different varieties of succulents have different water requirements. Some varieties are more drought tolerant, while others require more water. Therefore, understanding the characteristics and needs of the succulents you grow will help you better determine the frequency and amount of watering.
