How to plant Bauhinia seeds

How to plant Bauhinia seeds

Seed treatment

September to October is the period when Bauhinia seeds mature. By then we can see many fruit pods hanging on the branches. At this time, we can pick the ripe pods, open them along the cracks, and take out the seeds.

Then dry the seeds, bury them under cool dry sand, and place them in a room at about 5℃ to overwinter. Wait until the beginning of next spring before sowing them.

After the beginning of next spring, the seeds need to be soaked in 60°C hot water for about 72 hours to allow the seeds to absorb water and swell. Then soak the seeds in warm water until the radicle of the seeds elongates and white buds appear before they can be used for sowing.

Ground planting method

Generally speaking, Bauhinia is planted in the ground, and the method of planting varies depending on the number of plants planted.

If you are planting in large quantities, you must first prepare a seedbed for raising seedlings. Spread the processed seeds on the seedling bed and take good care of them. They will germinate in about two weeks. At this time, proper attention should be paid to thinning out the seedlings.

After that, you need to choose a piece of land suitable for seed germination and prepare a nursery. When the young plant grows 4 leaves, it can be moved out of the nursery bed and planted with a row spacing of 60cmx40cm.

If the number of seeds to be planted is small, you can sow them directly at the selected location. Before sowing, the land needs to be plowed deeply, 30cm is enough. Pick out the larger stones in the soil and apply some base fertilizer.

Then dig some small holes according to the number of plants to be planted. The hole depth should be 2cm. Note that the spacing between the holes should be about 40 cm and not too small, otherwise it may affect the normal growth of the plant.

Then sprinkle the processed seeds into small holes, cover with a layer of soil, and make the soil surface smooth. Finally, water the area around the seeds, make sure it is watered thoroughly to keep the soil at a certain humidity.

Potting method

In addition to planting in the ground, Bauhinia can also be grown in potted plants.

In comparison, the potted planting method is simpler. Choose a suitable flowerpot, put in planting soil, sprinkle the seeds and cover with 1 cm of soil. Finally, wet the potting soil and place it in a shady place.
