How to graft roses with buds

How to graft roses with buds

Variety selection

Regardless of the grafting method, it is best to choose the better traditional roses that bloom once in late spring and early summer, or you can choose double-season roses that bloom twice a year, but they must be hybridized in recent years. Among the many varieties, the best rose grafted with buds is the Dutch Four Seasons Rose, which has a strong fragrance and a long flowering period.

Preparation before grafting

The rootstock can be a wild rose or a Chinese rose. After selection, it can be dug up in early winter or early spring and then cultivated in a concentrated manner, waiting for grafting.

Rose grafting time

Generally, it is done before the spring buds sprout or when the branches mature and the axillary buds are full in three seasons.

Specific steps of grafting

Choose a sunny morning in the appropriate season for grafting. First of all, the scion should be a strong branch with full buds and leaves, free of diseases and insect pests. Use a knife to cut the scion, and the cut bud should be surrounded by a small area of cortex with wood. Make an incision of the same size on the rootstock five to ten centimeters from the ground, then align the scion close to the incision, remove the petiole, expose the upward bud, and finally wrap it tightly with a plastic bag or plastic tape.

Management after grafting

Water the graft in time after it is grafted, and then water it at the appropriate time in the future. During the growth of the plant, proper pruning should be carried out to cut off the excess parts to ensure healthy growth. It will be completely healed half a month to one month after grafting, and the plastic tie can be removed at this time. After that, we should start paying attention to preventing and controlling diseases and pests.
