How to graft wintersweet

Preparation for grafting wintersweet:

Grafting time

Grafting is usually carried out in spring when the weather is warm, but remember to start the grafting activity before the buds sprout (at the latest when the buds sprout to the size of rice grains). If the grafting time is chosen too late, the chance of plant survival will be greatly reduced.

Preliminary work:

Weeds should be cleared before grafting begins, and no fertilizer should be applied for about a month before grafting.

Selection of rootstock and scion:

The best choice of rootstock is a strong seedling that is more than two years old;

The scion should be selected from branches that have grown well for more than one year. The head of the scion should be pinched off before grafting to ensure that nutrients are concentrated in the middle of the branch. When cutting the scion, it is best to leave the wood slightly exposed to prevent moisture loss.

Grafting method of wintersweet:

The cut of the rootstock should be kept about 6-8 cm from the ground, and it is best to cut the scion so that the wood is slightly exposed to prevent moisture loss. Insert the scion into the rootstock, making sure the cambium layers of the two are aligned on at least one side.

Use plastic film to quickly tie up the joint between the two and avoid exposing them to the outside to prevent the loss of moisture and nutrients.

After grafting, make sure the plant has enough water and water it in time.

Maintenance of wintersweet after grafting:

1. Remember to remove the rootstock suckers within one month after successful grafting.

2. Weeds in potted plants must be removed in time

3. Pinching and pruning are also essential tasks

4. Remember to remove the plastic film after autumn and remember to transplant after winter.
