When is the best time to plant peas?

As one of the most popular vegetables in China, all parts of peas, such as young leaves, pods and green beans, are edible and are widely grown in many regions every year. Peas are relatively cold-resistant but sensitive to high temperatures. Its most suitable growth temperature range is approximately between 10℃ and 23℃. So when is the best time to plant peas?

When is the best time to plant peas?

Pea seedlings for spring consumption are generally sown in October, while pea pods for spring consumption are suitable for sowing from late October to early November.

Pea planting method whole process

1. Land preparation

Peas have relatively loose requirements for soil, but it is best to choose loam with a deep soil layer and low salinity, which is conducive to the growth and development of seedlings. Spring-sown peas need to be deep-turned in the autumn of the previous year, to a depth of about 15 to 25 cm. Shallow tillage is performed before sowing in spring to break up clods and ensure that the soil is loose. For peas planted in autumn and overwintering, the land should be prepared in time according to the specific situation to maintain soil aeration and good structure.

2. Fertilization

Pea cultivation usually relies mainly on organic fertilizer . Before sowing, decomposed livestock manure or compost can be applied, with a dosage of about 500 to 1,000 kilograms per hectare, combined with 30 kilograms of phosphate fertilizer and 25 kilograms of potash fertilizer. Since pea roots have the ability to fix nitrogen, additional fertilizer is usually not required in the later stages of growth.

3. Sowing time

Spring-sown peas are best sown in late February to early March in the south and in April to May in the north; autumn-sown varieties are sown in early September; and overwintering varieties are sown in late October to mid-November.

4. Sowing method

Peas for grinding flour are usually sown mechanically due to the large planting area . The row spacing is 10 to 20 cm, the plant spacing is 3 to 5 cm, the soil thickness is 3 to 5 cm, and the sowing amount is about 15 to 20 kg per mu. Since vegetable peas are planted in a small area, they are mostly sown manually. The row and plant spacing is similar to that of flour peas, and the seed rate per mu is about 10 to 15 kilograms.

5. Field management

For peas used for grinding flour, the first intertillage should be carried out when the seedlings are 5 to 10 cm tall, and the second intertillage should be carried out when the seedlings are about 15 cm tall to promote root development. Vegetable peas also need timely tillage. When the seedlings are about 20 cm tall, you can insert poles and build a frame to guide the plants to climb. Regarding watering, water the seedlings once every 10 days after they are 20 cm tall. Pay attention to diluting human feces and urine to prevent burning the seedlings.

6. Harvest

Peas for grinding flour are usually harvested in mid-to-late August, when 70% to 80% of the pods have turned yellow and the beans have become hard. Vegetable peas are harvested 12 to 14 days after flowering when the young pods show seeds but not grains. Autumn varieties are harvested before the cold wave arrives, while wintering varieties are harvested in April or May of the following year.

The above is some introduction to peas. There are actually many varieties of peas, and different varieties have different adaptability in different environmental climates.
