400 pots of succulents died overnight, it’s terrible!

Before summer, each succulent plant is still full of energy!

Because no measures were taken to survive the summer, there were only a bunch of pots of succulents left before the summer was over!

The succulents that have been dried into "dried plums" make Huahua feel so heartbroken just looking at them!

I believe many succulent lovers have experienced the situation where only the pot is left of the succulent plant. How can succulents overcome this hurdle in summer? Don’t worry, Huahua has collected all the key measures for summer succulent care to ensure that your succulents will spend the summer safely!

1. Watering

Watering has always been a difficult problem for growing succulents. Many succulent lovers only water them a little bit when they want to, and the water is sometimes dry and sometimes wet. Sooner or later, the succulents will be killed by you if you keep going back and forth like this!

Watering according to type

Succulents are divided into spring and autumn types and summer types. Different types of succulents require different numbers of watering in summer, so you must not treat them all the same!

1. Spring and Autumn Type

Common succulent plants such as Money String, Night Shade Plant, Alocasia odora, and Buddha Beads are all spring and autumn type succulents. They will enter a dormant period in summer and must be watered about once every 10-15 days. If the temperature reaches above 35 degrees, stop watering!

2. Summer type

Cacti, opuntia, and fire plants are summer-type succulents. Summer is their growing season, so they can be watered appropriately, about once a week.

Watering time

The dog days of summer are coming soon, and the temperature is soaring day by day. You can’t water the plants at the wrong time. Once you water them at the wrong time, the succulents will be dead soon!

1. Watering at night

The best time to water is between 19:00-20:00 after sunset. The temperature is relatively low at night, and coupled with good ventilation, it is less likely for roots to become suffocated, so succulents are relatively safe.

2. Watering during the day is strictly prohibited

The sunrise time is very early now. The sun is already very strong at eight or nine o'clock. Watering them during the day is undoubtedly giving the succulents a steam sauna. It would be strange if they don't die!

Watering method

1. Water along the edge of the basin

Water the pot in small amounts along the edge. No need to water it thoroughly. Just let the water diffuse in the soil. However, if the environment where the succulents are located is well ventilated and the soil and flower pots are very breathable, they can also be watered thoroughly.

2. Shorten the soaking time

Fill a plastic basin or foam box with water, with the water level approximately level with the height of the flower pot. Soaking for a dozen seconds will meet the water needs of the succulents. The time must not be too long, otherwise it will easily cause black root rot.

3. Avoid rain

There are many showers in the summer, and the rain is sudden and heavy, which can easily cause water accumulation in the pots. If there is strong sunshine after the rain, black rot is very likely to occur.

4. Add some fungicide

Continuous cloudy days are inevitable in the summer. The heat and high humidity make succulents prone to black rot, so prevention must be made in advance. When watering, you can add a little carbendazim or potassium permanganate, 1-2 times a month will be enough.

2. Illumination

The summer from July to August is the hottest. We all want to hide in the air-conditioned room every day, let alone succulents!

Lighting time

10-16 o'clock is the time when the sun is the hottest in the day. Do not expose succulents to direct sunlight during this period. At other times, you can let the succulents get more sunlight, especially the summer types. If they lack light in summer, the succulents will also grow too tall.

Shading measures

1. Indoor astigmatism maintenance

Most succulent plants of succulent lovers are not suitable for outdoor cultivation, so it is best to move them to a place with diffuse light indoors after 10 o'clock.

2. Pull the shade net

Succulent lovers who find it too troublesome to move their succulents around can choose to put up a shade net. The shade net can have a 30% shading effect. In cities with extremely strong sunlight, you can choose a 50% shading effect.

3. Ventilation

In addition to being hot, summer is also very stuffy. If ventilation is not done well, black rot, waterlogging, root rot... will all come knocking on your door, and your succulents will not survive more than 3 days!

Open window + fan

In summer, be sure to place succulents in a well-ventilated place and open windows more often for ventilation. If you are a flower lover who has an enclosed balcony at home, you can equip your succulents with a small fan to enhance air circulation.

Remove dead leaves from succulent plants

As succulents grow for a long time, a lot of dry leaves will accumulate at the bottom, which will affect the ventilation of the succulent roots. Moreover, the leaves are close to the soil, which affects the evaporation of water, creates a humid and hot environment, and easily breeds bacteria, so they must be removed in time!

Remove some side buds

Succulents like Jade Butterfly and Jade Lotus are particularly prone to growing side buds and small shoots. The entire stem is densely packed with side buds, which greatly affects ventilation. Over time, they are prone to black rot. In order for the succulents to survive the summer healthily, some of the small shoots must be removed.

4. Cooling

It's so hot in summer that Huahua wants to hug a watermelon and turn on the air conditioner every day. However, her small chubby body can't resist the scorching summer heat, so cooling down can save her life!

Put it in an air-conditioned room

When the outdoor temperature reaches over 30 degrees, friends who have air conditioning at home should try to put the succulents in the air-conditioned room. However, when no one is at home turning off the air conditioner, be sure to open the windows for ventilation, otherwise the meat will be suffocated!

Put a basin of water to cool down

If you have too many succulents and it is difficult to move them, you can put a basin of water next to the succulents. The evaporation of water will increase the air humidity and have a cooling effect on the local environment.

Evening spray cooling

Spraying the air above succulents at night can not only add some moisture to the succulents, but also have a certain cooling effect. However, you must pay attention to strengthening ventilation and not leave a large number of water droplets on the leaves of succulents. Once the water droplets flow into the center of the leaves, they will easily turn into water.

5. Soil preparation

In summer, succulents are in poor condition, and the first thing to check is the soil. Just like food is the first necessity of people, soil is the first necessity of succulent plants, so the soil must be suitable!

Soil preparation for seedlings and weak seedlings

For seedlings or unhealthy weak seedlings, it is best to mix peat soil and coarse sand in a 1:1 ratio. You can add a small amount of Akadama soil to help rooting. Such soil has good moisture, which is conducive to the growth and recovery of succulents.

Soil preparation for mature seedlings and old piles

For mature seedlings or old stumps in good condition, try to choose soil with good water permeability to avoid suffocating the roots. Flower lovers can choose a mixture of coarse sand or volcanic rock and peat soil in a ratio of 7:3.

6. Pests

Scale insects are probably the most hated things for succulent lovers. I guess I can’t finish complaining about them even if I talk about them for three days and three nights! Summer is the outbreak period of scale insects. If not dealt with in time, the disease will spread from one to ten, and from ten to a hundred, and no succulent plant will be spared!

If there are relatively few scale insects on the succulents, you can use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to stick them off, or simply pinch them to death with your hands.

If there are a lot of insects, you need to use special medicine to spray and kill them. It is recommended that you go to the pharmacy to buy special insecticides, such as imidacloprid.

7. Black Corrupted Water

Nine out of ten succulent lovers have encountered black rot. Summer is definitely the season when black rot breaks out. Improper watering and poor ventilation... can all cause black rot. However, if discovered in time, black rot succulents can still be saved.

1. Prepare a sterilized knife and cut off the head above the black rot area of the succulent.

2. After cutting off the head, apply carbendazim powder to the wound of the succulent, and then place it in a cool and ventilated place to dry.

3. Place the dried succulents in a mineral water bottle filled with clean water to induce rooting. After the roots grow out, you can put them in pots!

4. After potting, place it in a cool and ventilated place to allow its roots to adapt to the pot. After about a week, you can resume normal maintenance.

The dog days of summer are coming soon.

I don't want all the succulents to die.

Hurry up and prepare your succulent plants for the summer!

It will be too late if you are any later!

<<:  Pinch the half-dead flower a few times and new buds will immediately appear, and it will bloom in 10 days!

>>:  Big, plump and juicy! The succulents after the rain are so beautiful!
