How to propagate gladiolus

Gladiolus meristem reproduction

This is one of the main ways of propagating gladiolus, namely bulb division. After gladiolus is planted, new bulbs will form where the mother bulb sprouted. As the new bulb grows slowly, many daughter bulbs will form between the new bulb and the mother bulb. The large daughter bulbs are about 1 cm in diameter and can bloom in the same year after cultivation. The small daughter bulbs are as big as mung beans and can bloom after one or two years of cultivation. In October and November after flowering, lift the bulbs and separate them according to their sizes. Discard the old bulbs and keep the new bulbs and sub-bulbs. Dry them thoroughly in the sun and then store them in a ventilated and dry place with a temperature of 5-10℃. They can be sown the following year.

If the number of bulbs is relatively small, they can be cut and then propagated. Remove the outer membrane of the healthy and large bulbs, disinfect the bulbs with a sharp knife and cut them into several pieces. When cutting, make sure that each piece has more than one stem bud and stem disk. To prevent rot, you can apply wood ash or charcoal powder to the stem tray. After drying, place the stem buds upward in the culture soil at a depth of 5-10 cm.

Gladiolus seed propagation

The bulbs of gladiolus have no dormant period. They will crack open by themselves when the fruit is ripe. The seeds must be harvested in time. Because their lifespan is relatively short, they must be sown in time after harvesting. Generally, they are planted by broadcasting in mid- or early September. It is best to keep the temperature at ℃. Seedlings will emerge in about a month.

Tissue culture propagation of gladiolus

Dormant buds, axillary buds, and bulb cuttings can all be used as explants. After disinfection and inoculation, they can be cultured at 25°C. Seedlings can be obtained through induction, subculture, and rooting culture. Seedlings can be further cultivated to obtain small bulbs. After two years of planting, they will grow into mother bulbs, and they are non-toxic.

The above are several methods of propagating gladiolus that the editor has summarized. I hope it can help everyone.
