How to propagate spiderwort by cuttings

How to propagate spiderwort by cuttings

1. Plant introduction

Net-grass is native to America, has a small foliage index, prefers a warm and humid environment, and requires attention to heat preservation during winter maintenance. Net-grass has elegant leaves with web-like veins all over the leaves, making it one of the easier plants to grow indoors.

There are many varieties of spiderwort, including the common white spiderwort and red spiderwort. Among all the varieties, white spiderwort is the most commonly planted. If you look closely at white spiderwort, you will see that the leaves are covered with fluff, and the hairs on the square stems are more obvious. It has oval leaves, a short plant, and appears to be creeping when growing vigorously.

2. Cutting time

The branches of spiderwort can easily grow adventitious roots, making them excellent for cuttings. You can pick a few branches from outside or at a friend's house and use them to make a pot of cuttings. The best time for cuttings is spring and autumn.

3. Selection of cuttings

First of all, you have to choose a strong mother plant, not just any one will do. The best spiderwort to choose is one with branches spread out flat.

Then select branches with terminal buds, about 5 cm in length, and 3 to 5 nodes. Cut off the leaves of the stems and branches inserted into the soil, or cut off half of the leaves to reduce nutrient consumption.

4. Cutting method

Cuttings of the prepared branches are placed in flowerpots. A flowerpot of about 10 cm requires 8 to 10 branches, and then cultivated in small pots.

After cuttings, place them in a cool and ventilated place and give them appropriate light. They will take root in 2 to 3 weeks. When the leaves gradually recover and grow small tender leaves, apply a small amount of slow-release fertilizer and perform appropriate pruning and pinching. You should know that sufficient sunlight and nutrients can make the cuttings grow quickly.

5. Maintenance after cutting

Net-veined grass needs plenty of sunlight to grow, otherwise, its stems and leaves will easily grow too long and lose its ornamental value. Once spiderwort grows too tall, it is very difficult to recover and it can be said to be extremely ugly!

In addition, spiderwort is afraid of cold, and leaves will fall easily if the temperature is too low. If you have worked hard to take cuttings in spring and autumn, don’t rush around in winter.
