Propagation of tuberose by dividing bulbs

Propagation of tuberose by dividing bulbs

Tuberose bulb division time

Generally, bulb propagation is carried out in spring. The large bulblets can bloom in the same year, and the small bulblets can bloom after one to two years of cultivation.

Preparation for tuberose bulb division

Before the frost in late autumn, after the above-ground part of the tuberose has withered, dig out the bulbs and dry them in the sun. Remove the soil and fibrous roots, remove the wrinkled old bulbs, leaving only the new bulbs, and cut a thin layer off the bottom of the bulb to expose the white roots; continue to dry them, then braid the remaining leaves into braids and hang them in a warm and dry place to store them over the winter.

Or you can use the stove smoking method, hang the bulbs indoors and place a stove underneath to smoke them.

Divide the bulbs into 5-6 large bulbs and 10-30 small bulbs, dry them and store them in a dry and ventilated place indoors.

The potting soil is generally loose, well-drained and breathable, slightly acidic soil. It is usually made of 3 parts peat soil or leaf mold, 2 parts coarse river mud and a small amount of farmyard manure. When potting, the bottom is filled with granular broken bricks about 1/5 deep.

Steps to divide tuberose

It is usually planted in April and May. Before planting, the bulbs are placed in an environment of 25℃-30℃ for about 10-15 days for wet treatment.

Plant large bulbs and small bulbs separately, and the planting depth should be shallower because shallow planting is conducive to flowering. Generally, it is appropriate to plant large bulbs with the top of the bud slightly exposed above the ground. When planting small bulbs, the top of the bud should be lower than or flush with the soil surface.

It usually takes more than a month for the seedlings to germinate, and then they grow faster.

Management of tuberose after bulb division

In the early stage, the seedlings are small and have few leaves, so do not overwater. When the flower stems emerge, you must maintain sufficient moisture. During the rainy season, be careful not to let water accumulate in the pot to prevent root rot.

Tuberose likes fertilizer. Generally, it is applied once one month after planting, once before flowering, and then once every one and a half months or two months. Top dressing is required before flowering.
