How to propagate Catharanthus roseus

Seed propagation

The most commonly used method of propagation for Catharanthus roseus is sowing, which is usually carried out in early spring in April. Put sterilized leaf mold, fine sand and culture soil in the flowerpot, sprinkle the seeds evenly in it, control the temperature at 18~24℃, and the seedlings will emerge in about 14~21 days. After the seedlings grow, place the flower pot in a place with strong light and high temperature. If the sunlight is too strong, provide appropriate shade.

When the seedlings grow to about 5 cm and have 3 pairs of leaves, they can be planted in pots. Or you can directly plant the seedlings in the flower bed, water them every 3 to 5 days, and apply appropriate amounts of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

Cutting propagation

Cuttings are usually carried out in spring or early summer. Cut young branches from perennial overwintering old plants with a length of 8 to 10 cm. Cut off the lower branches and leaves, leaving only 2 to 3 pairs of leaves at the top.

Insert the branches directly into the sand bed, keep the soil moist, control the temperature at 20~24℃, and pay attention to shade in time. The cuttings will take root 15 to 20 days after cutting. When the seedlings grow to about 10 cm, top them to promote growth.

Tissue culture

This is a highly difficult breeding method. It uses professional culture dishes and culture fluid, and selects stem tips for culture. After about a month, adventitious buds will grow. Then the nutrient solution is replaced, and after another half a month, small white roots will grow, gradually growing into a complete plant.

Tissue culture is quite difficult, so just understand it and it is not recommended to try.
