Cutting method of osmanthus

Cutting method of osmanthus

Cutting time

The best time for cuttings is from mid -May to mid- July and from mid- September to mid- October each year. At this time, the new shoots have stopped growing, the branches have more nutrients, the meristem is stronger, and the temperature is more suitable, so it is easy to take root.

Matrix preparation

The most suitable soil is slightly acidic sandy loam with deep soil layer, loose, fertile and good drainage.

Cutting selection

Choose high-quality plants with vigorous growth and no diseases or insect pests as mother trees. Cut the semi-lignified young branches of the current year from the upper outer part as cuttings. All cuttings are graded and bundled into small bundles, the bases are wrapped with wet toilet paper and brought back indoors for transplanting.

Cuttings processing

Cut each cutting into 8-10 cm length, keep 2 leaves on the upper part, cut off half of the leaves, cut the upper end into a flat end, cut the base into an oblique end, and then immerse the base 3 cm in 500,000 parts of naphthaleneacetic acid or 10,000 parts of No. 1 ABT rooting powder solution, and take it out after 1 hour.

Cutting operation

Cuttings should be planted in beds (sections) according to diameter grades. With a plant spacing of 5 × 10 cm, first use a wooden stick of the same thickness as the cuttings to poke holes in the cutting bed, then insert 2/3 of the cuttings into the holes and compact the soil around the cuttings. Finally, water the planting bed thoroughly with a 10,000- fold solution of carbendazim to disinfect the soil and supply water for moisture retention.

Post-insertion management

① The soil humidity should be around 50% , while the air humidity should be kept above 85% .

② In the early stage of cuttings, the shade degree of the shade shed is maintained at about 80% . This can prevent direct sunlight and ensure sufficient scattered light to facilitate photosynthesis of leaf cuttings and promote rooting.

③ After 10 days, spray the leaves with 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate or 0.5% superphosphate and 0.1% urea solution once.

④ After 30 days, the roots will basically take shape, and you can remove the film and increase the light. After the seedlings have taken root, pay attention to leaf spraying and shading on sunny days in summer.

⑤ To make the seedlings grow strong, you can spray 0.05% of "Leaf Treasure" on the leaves, and do not fertilize from the roots. It can be transplanted into pots in September to October or in the spring of the following year.
