How to propagate the lucky tree

How to propagate the lucky tree

Cutting propagation of lucky tree

Cutting time

Taking into account the growth temperature of the roots of the lucky tree, the time for cuttings is generally chosen between March and April. The temperature should be around 15℃, so the roots can grow faster and have a high survival rate.

Selection of branches

Choose 1-2 year old woody branches, about 15-20 cm in length, cut off all the leaves, and keep the distance between the incision and the stem node about 0.5 cm.

Cut the branches and directly plant them in sandy soil at a depth of 1/3 or 1/2 of the branches. If it is too shallow, the branches will not be fixed and it will be difficult to take root.

Maintenance after cutting

After transplanting, keep the soil moist. After 20 days, gently pull the branches with your hands to check the growth of the roots. If they are hard to pull up, it means they have taken root. Dig out the branches with the soil ball and plant them in pots. After that, just follow the maintenance methods for the lucky tree and maintain it normally!

Seed propagation of lucky tree

Selecting a seed

The seeds of the lucky tree usually mature in December every year. It is recommended not to buy seeds at this time. If novices do not know how to preserve them, it will be difficult to grow a lucky tree.

Seed soaking and germination

In early March, purchase plump, dry seeds. Soak the seeds in water for 3 to 4 hours, remove and dry them. The skin of the lucky tree seeds is not very hard. Do not soak them for too long to avoid the seeds rotting.

sowing

Plant the processed seeds evenly in the soil, with a certain distance between each seed, and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Then cover the flowerpot with a layer of protective film to ensure sufficient humidity for the seeds to germinate.

After the seeds germinate, remove the film and provide appropriate light protection. When the seeds have 4 to 5 leaves, they can be planted in pots.

Layering propagation of lucky tree

Layering is the most labor-saving method of propagation, but its disadvantage is that if layering is not done properly, new plants will not be propagated and the pressed branches will be difficult to grow.

Layering time

Every spring is the growing season for the lucky tree, and layering at this time can increase the survival rate. In addition, if layering is unsuccessful, the branches can be cut short in time so that they can grow again.

Layering method

Choose two-year-old branches and ring-bark them at the lower end. The width of the ring should be 2 to 3 times the diameter.

Then wrap the ring-barking area with soil and knead it into a soil ball with a diameter of 8 to 10 cm. Then wrap the soil ball with plastic film, leaving a small opening at the top for easy watering. Then tie the ringed branches to the thick branches to fix them to prevent them from breaking and affecting their growth.

After three quarters, by autumn, a relatively complete root system will have grown from the ring-barking area. At this time, it can be cut off and planted in another pot.
