How to breed Michelia

How to breed Michelia

Michelia grafting propagation method

Grafting time

The grafting of Michelia is generally divided into spring grafting and autumn grafting. Spring grafting is suitable for late March to early April before Michelia sprouts, and autumn grafting is suitable for late September to early October .

Grafting method

Grafting generally adopts the cut grafting method, and the scion is selected from the one-year-old strong branch of the mother plant without leaves. Graft the branches directly onto the rootstock. After grafting, to prevent moisture from seeping into the wound, cover it with straw or wrap it with a paper towel, leaving the top exposed. After 25 days, the scion will heal and sprout. At this time, remove the covering and cut off the sprouts.

Michelia cutting propagation method

Cutting time

The best time for cuttings is spring and summer. Spring planting is carried out in late March . Cutting propagation can produce more plants in a short period of time, but compared to grafting, cutting propagation is slower.

Cutting method

Select 1-2 year old branches, 10-15 cm long, cut off the lower leaves, insert into loess, shade after cuttings, keep the sand surface moist, and plant in pots after roots take root.

Michelia layering propagation method

Layering time

Layering can be done at any time during the growing season of Michelia, but April is the most suitable month. The survival rate of layering propagation is relatively high, because home cultivation generally only requires 2 to 3 plants, so layering is most suitable for home use.

Layering method

Select 2- year-old branches of appropriate size, good development, and strong tissue, with a length of 15 to 20 cm. Choose a good rooting site for soil coverage, and make a ring peeling with a width of 0.5-1 cm. The peeling should be deep into the wood. Then put on a plastic bag, make the lower end firm, fill the bag with moss and culture soil or vermiculite that has absorbed enough water, and leave a hole at the top to facilitate watering and ventilation.

During the maintenance period, water the bag frequently to ensure sufficient humidity, and it will take about 2 months for the roots to grow. After the roots are well developed, you can plant it in a pot. After potting, place it in semi-shade for 2 weeks without applying fertilizer. Then gradually increase the light.

Michelia sowing propagation method

Sowing time

Seed propagation of Michelia is suitable for mass reproduction, but it blooms late and the flowers are small. Sowing is usually done in late February to early March .

The seeds can be sown immediately after harvesting, or they can be stored in sand until late February or early March of the following year.

Sowing method

At home, you can directly sow the seeds in a flowerpot, cover it with 2 to 3 cm of soil, and place it in a semi-shaded place. The seedlings will emerge in about 1 month. After the seedlings emerge, they need to be maintained for a period of time, and then they can be planted with soil in the spring of next year!
