How to prune geraniums

How to prune geraniums

Pruning tools

If you want a beautiful plant shape and many flowers, you have to be ruthless. Scissors, saws, knives, daggers, no matter what the weapon is, the faster and sharper the better.

Scalpels, men's single-edged razors, razor blades, and sharp scissors can all be used to trim cuttings, which is great.

The cut should be as neat as possible so that it heals quickly, especially for large and thick stems like those of an apple bowl.

The neater the branches are cut, the better. If they are cut like they were chewed by a dog, they will rot easily.

The knife should be disinfected with alcohol. After cutting one tree, it should be disinfected before cutting other ones.

Things to know before pruning

Pruning also depends on the variety. Hybrid geraniums have poor natural branching, so the effect after pinching will not be as obvious as other varieties. However, you still need to pinch them, but don't have too high expectations for branching. This is the characteristic of hybrid geraniums. Therefore, if you want to create a perfect plant shape, you must be cautious when choosing hybrid varieties.

Pruning methods

According to the growth of the plant, choose 3 to 5 main branches that are strong and evenly distributed near the base in autumn, and leave the others too dense. Weak and leggy branches can be cut directly off from the base.

Then prune the main branches and side branches, leaving only the healthy side buds on each side branch. In this way, the entire branch is evenly distributed and compact, and the plant is plump and strong.
