How to cultivate new varieties of cactus

Artificial pollination

First of all, to cultivate a new variety of cactus, artificial pollination is required. Cactus is not easy to self-pollinate, so artificial pollination is needed between cacti with closely related species to obtain seeds of the new variety.

Pay attention to time

The flowering period of cactus is extremely short, ranging from a few hours to 5 days. At this time, wait for the cactus to bloom. Generally, indoor cacti bloom from April to June, with May being its peak flowering period.

Flowering and pollination

The cactus blooms most vigorously after 12 noon. At this time, you should dip the pollen and apply it to the stigma of the pistil. When pollinating, try to avoid the flower being too wet or too wet, otherwise it will lead to the failure of pollination and affect the success rate of pollination.

Pay attention to harvesting

After hard work, once the cactus is successfully pollinated, the ovary of the mother plant will swell, and it will take about 1-2 months for it to change from light red to purple, and it will be mature for harvesting.

Seed collection and cleaning

Clean the harvested seeds randomly, put them into paper bags and store them in a cool and dry place. They can be sown the following year.
