How to propagate azalea

Cutting propagation of azalea

As long as the temperature is suitable, it can be carried out all year round, but early summer and late autumn are most suitable.

For cuttings, use river sand, vermiculite, and peat. Select the new shoots that sprouted this year as cuttings, cut them from the base, cut off the leaves at the base, and only keep 2 to 3 leaves.

Insert the branches into the soil, water them sufficiently, and provide appropriate shade. If the air humidity is low, cover them with plastic film to keep them moist. Within half a month, spray water 3 to 4 times a day, and it will take root after 1 month. (Pure text is inevitably empty, the editor has compiled a detailed diagram of the cutting steps for everyone, go and take a look)

Layering propagation of azalea

For some varieties that are difficult to root, layering propagation is used. The survival rate of layering is higher from late October to February.

Choose 2-3 year old branches, make cuts on the layered part until you can see the wood layer inside, then wrap the cut with wet mud, put it in a plastic bag, keep the mud ball moist, and it will take root after 4 months. After rooting, cut the branches and plant them together with the mud ball.

Grafting propagation of azalea

Grafting is usually done in June or later in autumn.

Select 3-4 year old plants as rootstocks, and cut 3-5 cm young branches grown that year as scions. Make a small cut on the rootstock, insert the branch, wrap it with plastic film, and then place it in a cool place. The wound will heal after 2 months.

The advantage of grafting is that varieties of different flower colors and flowering periods can be grafted onto the same plant, greatly improving the ornamental value.

Seed propagation of azalea

Most rhododendrons can bear fruit. From October to January every year, the seeds are collected and placed in a ventilated and cool place to dry. Pot sowing can be carried out in March and April. Because the seeds are small, the pots and soil must be disinfected before planting, and the seeds should be evenly sprinkled in the soil. After sowing, cover with a layer of glass or plastic film. Seedlings will grow in May and June. When they grow 2 to 3 leaves, they can be planted in pots. Note that only 3 plants are needed per pot.
