How to propagate Monstera

How to propagate Monstera

Seed propagation

Get seeds

Monstera blooms in summer and produces seeds after flowering. If you want to propagate Monstera by sowing, it is best to collect the seeds yourself. When it blooms every year, artificial pollination is carried out twice: at 9-10 am and 3-4 pm. This method has a high pollination success rate.

It takes 15 months from pollination to seed maturity, which is a long time and requires patience. During the seed development stage, pay attention to ensure good ventilation, strengthen water and fertilizer management, and promote firm and full seedlings.

Seed soaking disinfection

After a long wait of 15 months, you can collect the seeds. Select plump seeds, soak them in 40℃ warm water for 10 hours, and then take them out for later use.

Disinfect the soil where sowing is to be done, expose it to the sun or water it with disinfectant.

sowing

Monstera seeds are relatively large and can be sown at a distance of 2 to 3 cm between each seed.

After sowing, control the temperature at 20~25℃, cover with a layer of plastic film, and maintain humidity above 80%. It will germinate in 20 to 25 days. After small leaves grow, they can be planted in separate pots.

Cutting propagation

Cutting time

Stem node cuttings can be used in both spring and autumn, with the best results coming from April to May in spring and from September to October in autumn.

Cutting method

Select the current year's side branches with full stems and strong growth, with a length of 20 to 25 cm. Cut off the leaves at the base, keep the leaflets at the top, trim the aerial roots, and keep the shorter parts to help absorb water and promote root growth.

The soil for cuttings should be a mixture of coarse sand, peat or leaf mold.

Insert the prepared branches into the soil, control the temperature at 25~27℃ and high air humidity, and they will take root one month after insertion.

After the cuttings take root, the axillary buds on the stem nodes begin to sprout, and maintenance should be strengthened at this time. To promote the growth of seedlings, keep the room temperature at 10℃ and strengthen water and fertilizer management.

Propagation by division

In summer and autumn, the side branches of large Monstera are chopped off in whole sections, with some aerial roots, and directly planted in wooden barrels or pots. This not only has a high survival rate, but also has a quick shaping effect. It is now the most commonly used and one of the simplest methods for propagating Monstera.
