How to breed azalea

How to breed azalea

1. Cutting propagation

This method is the most commonly used method in daily life. The advantage is that this method is simple and has a high probability of successful breeding. When propagating in this way, it is best to use a new pot with a diameter of 20 cm, and the material should be a clay pot. Because this type of pot has good air permeability, it is easier to grow roots. Spring and autumn are the best time for cuttings, and a temperature of around 23°C is conducive to survival. Before taking cuttings, you need to spray the soil in the flowerpot one day in advance, but not too wet, the soil should be just moist when taking cuttings. The depth of insertion in the soil is 3-4 cm. After the cuttings are completed, cover the pot with a plastic bag and tie the bag tightly. Open the plastic bag when watering and tie it again after watering.

2. Layering

① Generally, high technology is used for layering. Layering is usually done in April and May. First, remove a 2-3 year old, relatively healthy and vigorous branch from the mother plant, and use a knife to cut off a circle of branch bark about 1 cm wide about 10 cm above the branch. Then wrap the branches loosely with a rectangular plastic film, tie them up with a rope about 2 cm below the cut end of the branch, open the upper end of the plastic film into a trumpet shape, and then fill in the soil from the top.

② If there is a lack of water, you can water the branches by spraying water on the leaves. Let the water flow down along the branches and slowly seep into the soil, maintaining the moisture of the soil, speeding up the healing of the wounds on the branches, and allowing it to grow new roots. After 3 months, when the roots are 3 cm long, they can be separated from the mother plant.

3. Seeding and breeding

Most varieties can be propagated by sowing. The seeds mature from October to January each year. When the color of the peel changes from green to yellow and finally to brown, the upper part of the fruit will crack and the seeds will begin to scatter. At this time, the seeds can be collected. Generally, sowing is done in March and April, in pots. Because the seeds are small, the pots should be cleaned and dried, and the pots and soil should be disinfected.
