How to trim and maintain Milan?

Milan is a plant that blooms all year round. Its flowers are rich in fragrance and it is a woody plant. Many flower lovers avoid pruning when caring for their plant because pruning may cause it to stop flowering. Let’s learn how to prune and maintain Milan.

1. Pruning method

In fact, Milan does not need frequent pruning. If you plan to prune, it's best to do so in the north or south when temperatures are cooler, especially in late fall, before winter sets in. Because Milan will stop growing at a temperature of about 10 degrees, but if the temperature remains above 15 degrees, it will continue to grow and bloom. Therefore, the best time to prune is a heavy pruning at the end of autumn.

Pruning tips include:

Cut off the dense branches inside to increase ventilation and light. Cut off the weak shoots at the bottom to prevent them from consuming too much nutrients. If the top branches are too long, they can be shortened appropriately to reduce nutrient consumption and help the plant survive the winter safely. Through pruning, you can shape a beautiful plant shape, laying the foundation for germination and flowering next spring. After pruning, the Milan flower will sprout quickly in the second year, and after the new shoots grow to a certain height, they will continue to bloom.

2. Maintenance points

1. Soil selection

Milan needs to grow in loose, well-drained, and breathable slightly acidic sandy soil. Avoid using soils that are heavily saline or compacted. It is recommended to replace the potting soil every one or two years to maintain soil fertility and a suitable growth environment.

2. Lighting requirements

Milan flowers need plenty of sunlight, at least 8-12 hours of light a day, to promote their healthy growth and flourishing flowers. It can be placed on a balcony or sunny windowsill to ensure plenty of natural light. When the sun is strong in summer, you should pay attention to providing proper shade to avoid direct sunlight causing damage to the leaves.

3. Temperature management

Milan flowers like a warm environment, and the most suitable growth temperature is 20℃-35℃. When the temperature exceeds 30℃, more flowers bloom and the fragrance is stronger. It is not cold-resistant, so you should keep warm in winter to avoid damage to the plant caused by low temperature.

4. Watering strategy

During the growing period, the soil in the pot should be kept moist, watered in time, and the soil should be prevented from drying out. When the temperature drops in winter, the growth rate of plants slows down. At this time, the frequency of watering should be reduced to prevent root rot caused by excessive water.

5. Fertilization method:

Milan flowers need sufficient fertilizer during their growth process, and the principle of "applying small amounts of fertilizer frequently" should be followed. Applying the right amount of fertilizer regularly ensures that your plants receive the nutrients they need for continued growth and flowering.

In summary, Milan must ensure that the plant receives sufficient light throughout the year, both in the growing season and the dormant season. Through these methods, the plant morphology of Milan flowers can be well controlled and the flowering performance will be very strong.
