Is asparagus fern a herb or a woody plant? What does it look like?

1. Is it herbaceous or woody?

Asparagus fern is a herbaceous plant, strictly speaking, it belongs to the papery vine plant. It has a slightly woody base, but it is also a perennial herb. It is native to Africa and is now distributed in the northwest, central, and Yangtze River basins of my country. It is highly ornamental, and will bloom if maintained to a certain degree, so people will place it in living rooms, study rooms, etc.

2. Appearance

Asparagus fern is a climbing plant, and its growth height after maturity is about 3-6m. The roots are slightly fleshy, the stems are more branched and very smooth. The branches and leaves grow very luxuriantly, with leaf-like branches generally growing in clusters of 10-13. The base of the scaly leaves may have slightly thorny spurs, or the spurs may not be obvious. If well maintained, it will bloom in September and October. Most of the flowers are 1-3 or 4 axillary, with short stalks and white color. The berries are also very small, only 6-7mm in diameter. When they grow and mature, they are purple-black and usually contain 1-3 seeds.

3. Growth habits

Like many plants, asparagus fern likes to grow in a warm and humid climate. During maintenance, the temperature is best between 15-25℃. It is shade-tolerant, so do not expose the plant to direct sunlight. However, it can receive a little more light in winter. During the summer, you should not only dissipate heat and cool down in time, but also pay attention to shading. It is a cold-not-hardy plant and the maintenance temperature in winter must be above 10℃.
