Cypress cutting time and method

Cypress cutting time and method

1. Cutting time

Cypress trees can be grown by cuttings, and the time for cuttings can be chosen in spring and autumn, but the branches used are different. In early spring, the germination is strong and old branches grown last year can be used. Starting cuttings in autumn is also beneficial to survival, and you can use young branches grown that year.

2. Choose cuttings

Select thick and healthy branches from plants in good growth condition, cut 10-15 cm in length from the strongest part, and retain at least 3 nodes on each branch, which will promote later growth. Remove the leaves at the bottom of the branch to prevent it from rotting when inserted into the soil. Use a sharp knife to cut the lower end into an inclined surface to ensure a smooth cut.

3. Prepare the matrix

The main purpose of the substrate used for cuttings is to ensure air permeability so that water accumulation does not occur, which is more conducive to plant rooting. You can use clean plain sand or vermiculite, and spray water to moisturize before cuttings.

4. Take cuttings

Insert the branches obliquely into the substrate and adjust the surrounding temperature to keep it at 20-30 degrees Celsius. Too high or too low temperature will affect rooting. If the temperature is too low, rooting will be difficult. If the temperature is too high, it will be easy to be infected by bacteria. After cuttings, pay attention to maintenance and provide appropriate shade.
