Rosemary planting method and maintenance

Rosemary , this seemingly inconspicuous plant, actually has many benefits when grown at home. Although its flowers are not as gorgeous as peonies or roses, and its leaves are not as ornamental as Clivia, rosemary leaves have a unique aroma and are also a commonly used cooking spice. It can be used to roast lamb, bake potatoes , or make delicious foods such as small cookies. This spice can add a unique flavor to food and enhance the dish. Let’s learn how to plant and care for rosemary .

1. Lighting requirements

Rosemary prefers full sun, but can also adapt to semi-shady conditions. Long-term lack of light will cause the branches to become slender, affecting the plant's shape and the intensity of its aroma. Make sure your rosemary receives plenty of sunlight and avoid long periods of shade.

2. Water requirements

Although rosemary is drought-tolerant, overly dry soil can damage the roots and cause the leaves to droop. Overwatering is also bad for root health and may cause leaves to turn yellow or even die. During the maintenance process, water should be poured thoroughly when the soil is slightly dry to avoid water accumulation after rain. Follow the principle of "see dry and see wet" to keep the soil moderately moist and avoid waterlogging.

3. Nutrient requirements

As a herb, rosemary also requires an appropriate amount of nutrients. During the growing season (temperature 15℃~30℃), add fertilizer once a month and avoid applying fertilizer during high or low temperatures to avoid fertilizer damage. Using organic fertilizers , such as fermented rice water or cooked soybeans, can provide nutrients while ensuring the safety of rosemary. Use homemade compost to make your rosemary safe to eat.

4. Pruning tips

Rosemary requires proper pinching and pruning to promote the growth of new branches and make the plant more lush. When pruning, be sure to retain the flower branches in the hope of flowering and fruiting. Moderate pruning helps rosemary grow and branch, and beautifies the plant shape.

5. Maintenance during flowering period

Rosemary flowers are small and cute, and require a cool and ventilated environment during the flowering period to prolong the flowering period and promote fruiting. Avoid direct high temperatures and increase air humidity appropriately, but do not spray on the flowers. Cool shade, moderate temperatures and good ventilation help rosemary bloom and bear fruit.

In short, through the above maintenance points, you can ensure the healthy growth of rosemary, which not only brings a fresh aroma to the family, but also can play its unique flavor in cooking.
