How many years does it take for a lychee tree to bear fruit? Pictures of lychee trees

1. How many years does it take for a lychee tree to bear fruit?

The time when litchi trees bear fruit varies depending on the method of reproduction. Lychee trees propagated by seed usually bear fruit relatively late, requiring six to seven years or even more than ten years. Litchi trees propagated by grafting can bloom two or three years after planting, and can bear fruit when the crown width is more than one meter. However, because lychees are tall trees and are relatively nutrient-intensive, it will take five or six years before you can have a large harvest. The lychee tree propagated by ring branches has a long development period and a well-developed root system, so it will bear fruit earlier. It will bear fruit after about two to three years when the crown width grows to about one meter.

At present, most of the litchi production still adopts the method of grafting and ring branch propagation. Seedling propagation takes too long and is generally only used for breeding.

2. How many years does it take for a potted lychee tree to bear fruit?

It usually takes five to seven years for a potted lychee tree to bear fruit. If the potted lychee tree is a solid seedling, then it will take longer for it to bear fruit, and it may take seven to nine years before you can gradually harvest. If it is planted after grafting, it may bear fruit earlier. Generally, it will bloom in about three years after planting, and the fruits can be harvested in five to six years.

The most convenient way to plant litchi trees in pots yourself is to directly purchase solid tree seedlings or grafted seedlings for planting. The breeding process requires strong patience and a lot of energy to take care of it.
