How to care for boxwood in autumn

How to care for boxwood in autumn

1. Control the temperature

It is not frost-resistant, and maintenance in late autumn and early winter requires ensuring that the growth temperature is no lower than eight degrees. If it drops below an octave, it stops growing. If it is raised outdoors, it must be kept warm before the cold wave arrives. If you grow it indoors, avoid placing it in ventilated locations such as windows and doorways, as these places are relatively cold and are not conducive to its growth.

2. Control watering

When the weather is too cold, the plants will not only fail to absorb water, but will also be frozen due to the low water temperature. Therefore, in late autumn, you need to reduce the amount of watering, or it is best to stop watering. If the plant is short of water, just sprinkle water on the soil to keep it moist.

3. Increase Lighting

It likes sunshine, and if the light is increased in autumn, the safety of wintering can be improved. Adequate sunlight can meet the boxwood's needs for photosynthesis and prevent its leaves from growing yellow.

4. Reduce fertilization

Fertilizer can be applied in early autumn, but not in late autumn. Fertilizer damage is likely to occur when fertilizing in late autumn. In order to ensure sufficient nutrients for the winter, topdressing is required before the end of autumn. Choose potassium fertilizer as the fertilizer type, which can improve the resistance of plants.

5. Pruning

It will not grow in winter and cannot be pruned in winter. However, in order to make it grow better next year, it needs to be pruned once before winter. The branches that are not growing well should be cut off, leaving only healthy branches. This will concentrate nutrients and prepare for the winter.
