How to grow chicory

How to grow chicory

1. Maintenance methods

1. Temperature: It is a warm-loving variety and can be kept at 15 to 25 degrees. Its distribution range also includes relatively northern areas, so its cold resistance is very good. However, a too hot and stuffy environment will harm its health, so it should not be placed in a poorly ventilated and very high temperature place.

2. Light: Wild chicory will be distributed in places with sufficient sunlight, which shows that it has relatively high requirements for sunlight, so try not to make the sunlight too weak, otherwise it will affect its growth and quality. If the light is too strong, it is best to provide shade.

3. Watering: When chicory grows fast, it needs more water, which needs to be replenished in time, and it is best to water it thoroughly. But you must remember to drain water during the rainy season to prevent too much water from accumulating. If it is dormant, don't water it too much.

4. Fertilization: Chicory does not require much fertilizer, as long as there is enough nutrients in the soil, and not much topdressing is needed.

2. Breeding techniques

1. Reproduction: Sowing method can be used. About a week before sowing, the selected seeds need to be placed in a ventilated place to dry for a day or two, which can effectively increase the germination rate. Generally speaking, it is suitable to sow seeds from June to August. A certain amount of base fertilizer needs to be mixed into the substrate and turned evenly. You can use the "direct seeding" method to sow the seeds, and water them evenly after sowing.

2. Pruning: Normally, some dry and aging leaves can be cut off in time; in addition, leaves that are too dense and affect ventilation and light transmission should also be cut off. The next step is flower pruning, mainly after they bloom.

3. Problem diagnosis and treatment

1. Disease: There is "downy mildew", which is very harmful. It is best to take preventive measures before it occurs, for example, you can spray with chlorothalonil, about once every ten days or half a month. After it occurs, it can be treated using Anker classification. In addition, "rot disease" may also occur, which is often controlled by thiophanate-methyl. It is best to disinfect the seeds so that the probability of disease will be reduced later.

2. Pests: There are not many pests at ordinary times, so they can be prevented in advance.

IV. Other issues

1. Toxicity: Although it tastes bitter, it is non-toxic and is a medicinal herb.

2. Can it be grown at home? It is not an ornamental plant and it is not very common to keep it at home.
