Winter cucumber planting technology

Winter cucumber planting technology

Cucumbers are grown in a large area in China. Although the temperature is low in winter, cucumbers can still be grown. However, many aspects need to be paid attention to during the planting process to ensure the normal growth and high yield of cucumbers. Below, the editor will introduce the winter cucumber planting technology, let’s take a look.

1. Variety selection

When planting cucumbers in winter, you should choose varieties that are resistant to low temperatures and weak light, have few branches, good root nodes, and strong disease resistance. For example, Changchun Mici, Shandong Mici, Xintai Mici, Jinza No. 2, Jinza No. 3, Jinchun No. 2, as well as Zaoqing No. 3, Yuexiu No. 3, Zaoqing No. 2 in South China.

2. Sowing time

Winter and spring cucumbers are generally sown in mid-to-late October and transplanted from mid-to-late November to early December. There is also a saying that the cucumber sowing time is mid-January, the calendar seedling age is about 50 days, and the transplanting time is early March.

3. Temperature management

The suitable temperature range for cucumber growth is 25-30℃ during the day and 15-18℃ at night. After transplanting, the greenhouse temperature should be maintained at a relatively high level to facilitate seedling growth. After the seedlings have grown, strengthen measures such as insulation, frost prevention, ventilation, and heat prevention.

4. Moisture management

Pay attention to the weather forecast before watering, and choose to water in the morning after a cold wave or on a sunny day. After watering, increase the temperature in the greenhouse in time. Combine watering with top dressing. During late winter, cucumbers grow slowly and absorb relatively less nutrients. Top dressing can be applied according to the watering time, generally once every 15 days.

5. Fertilizer management

The base fertilizer should be sufficient organic fertilizer , such as decomposed farmyard manure, commercial organic fertilizer, etc., combined with an appropriate amount of compound fertilizer . In terms of topdressing, it should be carried out according to the different growth stages of cucumbers. Apply appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer during the seedling stage to promote plant growth. When entering the flowering and fruiting period, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and supplement with medium and trace element fertilizers.

6. Field management

The focus of management after planting is to increase soil temperature and air temperature to promote the growth of cucumber seedlings. Try to keep the ground temperature above 15℃ to promote the growth of new roots. At the beginning of flowering period, spray flowers with 100 times diluted fruit-protecting spirit to protect fruits, or dilute it 500 times with added colorant and spray it to improve the early yield and quality.

7. Pest and disease control

Prevention is the priority. Do a good job in disinfecting the greenhouse and thoroughly disinfect the shed, soil, farm tools, etc. before planting. Strengthen ventilation, reduce humidity in the greenhouse, and reduce the environmental conditions for the occurrence of diseases.

The above is an introduction to winter cucumber planting techniques . When planting cucumbers in winter, you can choose varieties that are resistant to low temperatures and weak light, have fewer branches, have good root nodes, and have strong disease resistance. Growers can master the above planting techniques to achieve the goal of stable production.
