Seed propagation of Ligustrum lucidum

For sowing Ligustrum lucidum, choose loose, fertile soil with convenient drainage and irrigation in a sunny place sheltered from the wind, preferably sandy loam and light clay. First of all, we need to apply base fertilizer mainly composed of manure, make the land solid at the bottom and hollow at the top, and level it. The main sowing method is broadcasting. Sprinkle the seeds evenly into the dug trench, then cover them with fine soil and water them thoroughly after sowing.

Generally speaking, the seed collection period in North China is from late November to mid-December. At this time, trees with good growth should be selected as mother trees for seed collection. It is best to choose to sow on a sunny afternoon, select mature and strong seeds, and dry them in the shade after picking them, avoiding direct sunlight. If the seeds are sown immediately after harvesting, the germination rate will be higher. Winter sowing is carried out before freezing, and germination is generally not required at this time. Spring sowing is usually done after thawing, and germination is more effective at this time.

Cutting propagation of Ligustrum lucidum

When propagating Ligustrum lucidum by cuttings, you can cut the branches grown in spring in November, bury them in a cellar, preserve them, and then take them out in March of the following year for cuttings. When cutting, use scissors to cut the upper end of the cutting into a flat end and the lower end into an oblique end, leaving one or two leaves on the upper part, and then insert it into the soil, keeping the plant spacing within 20-30cm. It will take root in about two months.

Layering propagation of Ligustrum lucidum

The layering propagation of Ligustrum lucidum is generally carried out in March and April every year. After layering, it can take root in the summer and can be transplanted in the spring of the second year.
