Differences between Coptis chinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis

1. Different rhizomes

The rhizome of Coptis chinensis is yellow, branched, and has many fibrous roots.

The rhizome of Scutellaria baicalensis is very thick and fleshy, with the bottom lying on the ground and rising up, and the height can reach 30-120 cm. The diameter of the bottom is about 2.5-3 mm.

2. Different leaves

The leaves of Coptis chinensis are somewhat leathery, about 3-8 cm long and about 2-3 cm wide. The top is very pointed and oval-shaped.

The leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis are hard and papery, about 1.5 to 4.5 cm long and 0.5 to 1.2 cm wide. Its apex is relatively blunt, the base is rounded, and its shape is lanceolate to linear-lanceolate. The leaves are dark green above and lighter below.

3. Different flowers

The flowers of Coptis chinensis are linear or linear-lanceolate, about 5-6.5 mm in length. Its top is gradually pointed and there is a honey groove in the middle.

The flowers of Scutellaria baicalensis are purple, purple-red or blue, and are about 2.3-3 cm long. The style is very slender, with a sharp tip and slight fissures.
