Cultivation methods and precautions of bamboo begonia

Cultivation methods and precautions of bamboo begonia

1. Maintenance methods

1. Substrate selection: Bamboo Begonia is suitable for growing in loose, well-drained soil, and can also be planted in slightly acidic soil.

2. Temperature management: It is suitable for growing in a warm environment, and the optimal growth temperature is 19℃-23℃. It can survive in temperatures between 0℃ and 2℃, but temperatures below 2℃ are not conducive to growth. It is resistant to high temperatures and can grow even when the temperature is above 29°C, but the growth will be slower.

3. Water management: It is afraid of drought and grows better in moist soil. It needs a lot of water during its growth period. In the hot summer, the amount of watering can be increased appropriately, but there should be no accumulation of water, otherwise the roots will easily rot. The plant grows slowly in winter, so water it less or not at all.

4. Light management: Bamboo Begonia likes sunlight, but cannot accept direct sunlight, so it grows better in places with scattered light. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to turn yellow, but too much shade can prevent the plant from blooming. When planting outdoors, choose a place with diffuse light and provide shade in summer.

2. Breeding techniques

1. Cuttings: Around June each year, select healthy and sturdy branches of about 15 cm from the plant. Each branch should have at least 2 buds and 3 leaves (large leaves can be cut down appropriately). Place them in a cool place for three to four days before planting.

2. Division: It can be done in spring, starting from the rhizome of the mother plant, and divide it into several pieces before planting.

3. Problem diagnosis and treatment

1. No flowering: High fertilizer concentration or too frequent fertilization, or too little light, can easily cause the plant to grow only thin branches but not bloom. Appropriate fertilizer should be applied, surrounding obstacles should be removed or branches should be pruned, and light should be increased.

2. Leaf falling: Avoid low ambient temperature and strengthen insulation measures in winter. When the light is too strong, provide shade. When the light is too little, trim the excess branches to increase light transmittance.

IV. Other issues

1. Flowering period: The flowers of bamboo begonia are mostly light red or white. They bloom every summer and the flowering period can extend to autumn.

2. Can it be raised outdoors? Yes. The bamboo crabapple has strong vitality. The branches that turn yellow in winter can sprout new buds in the spring of the following year. Suitable outdoor sunlight also helps its growth.
