How to Identify Hemlock

How to Identify Hemlock

1. Appearance

Hemlock is an evergreen shrub, about 25-30 meters tall and with a breast diameter of about 40-80 centimeters. The bark is flaky and brown-gray in color. The large branches are spread out flat and drooping. The crown of the tree is tower-shaped.

2. Blades

The leaves of hemlock are linear, entire, with a blunt and concave tip. The leaf surface is green and shiny, the back of the leaf is slightly lighter in color, light green, and has two stomatal bands.

3. Growth Environment

Hemlock is a relatively shade-tolerant tree species. Except for young trees which cannot withstand strong sunlight, adult trees can grow at the edge of the forest. Mountainous areas with frequent fog, heavy rain, high humidity, acidic soil and good drainage are very suitable for their growth. They have strong natural pruning ability, wind resistance and deep root formation, so their lifespan can reach more than hundreds of years.
