Differences between Pyracantha and Seabuckthorn

Different genus and species

Pyracantha is a plant of the genus Pyracantha in the Rosaceae family, and seabuckthorn is a plant of the genus Hippophae rhamnoides in the Elaeagnaceae family.

It can be seen that the two belong to different species, so their appearance and other characteristics will naturally be different.

Different fruits

The fruit of Pyracantha is oval in shape, orange in color, and mainly grows at the top of the main stem; the fruit of Seabuckthorn is round, red in color, and grows on the main stem rather than at the top.

From the appearance of the fruit and the growth location, you can also clearly distinguish between Pyracantha and Seabuckthorn.

Different overall appearance

The lateral branches of the Pyracantha plant are short and thorn-shaped at the tips. The young branches are covered with short, soft hairs, while the old branches are dark brown and not covered with hairs. The buds of Pyracantha are very small and covered with soft hairs. Its leaves are obovate-oblong with a blunt or slightly concave tip, a petiole attached underneath, and blunt serrations on the edges that are very sharp and bend inward.

The branches of sea buckthorn are thick and have many thorns. The young branches are brown-green and covered with white star-shaped hairs. The old branches are gray-black, rough and shriveled. Its branches are large and golden in color, with a small number of them being embroidered in color. Its leaves are opposite, similar to the branches, and are oblong-lanceolate. The two ends of the leaves are obtuse, and the base gradually widens. The upper side is green, the back side is silvery white, and there is no hair coverage.

Different value

The value of Pyracantha: The fruit of Pyracantha can be used as medicine, can eliminate accumulation and stop diarrhea, and is beneficial to digestion of the intestines; the leaves can clear away heat and detoxify, and can be used externally to treat sores, swelling, etc.

The value of sea buckthorn: It is rich in nutrients, and the fruit contains fatty acids, trace elements, linoleic acid and other substances; the leaves contain crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, etc. The fruit can be processed into juice, fruit wine, jam, and candied fruit for consumption. Its medicinal value can enhance human immunity and reduce illness.
