Cultivation method of five-color plum

soil

The five-color plum has strong adaptability and is not very demanding on soil. It can grow in sandy soil, heavy clay soil, acidic soil or calcareous soil, and grows best in fertile, loose sandy soil.

Water and fertilizer management

Watering: Prunus armeniaca likes a humid environment. Keep the soil in the pot moist during the growing period, avoid excessive dryness, and pay attention to spraying water on the leaves to increase the air humidity.

Fertilization: The flowering period of the five-color flower is relatively long, and top dressing is required 2-3 times a month in spring, summer and autumn, and top dressing should be applied in time after flowering. During the growing season, apply a thin layer of fertilizer mainly composed of phosphorus and potassium once every 15 days or so to provide sufficient nutrients. Combine it with watering to make the plant bloom more. Spraying 3% urea twice every 10 days can make the leaves thicker and greener. Stop fertilizing after bringing the plants indoors in winter.

Light: The five-color plum likes an environment with plenty of sunlight. It can be placed outdoors in a sunny place during the growing season. It does not need to be shaded even in midsummer, but good ventilation is required. Insufficient light will cause the plant to grow too tall, with thin and long stems and branches and sparse flowering, which will seriously affect the viewing experience.

Temperature: The five-color plum is native to tropical regions. After being introduced to other climate zones for cultivation, it was found that it can safely overwinter as long as the temperature is not lower than 8 degrees Celsius. The suitable temperature for growth is 8-30 degrees Celsius.

Reproduction method

The five-color plum seedlings can be propagated by sowing, cuttings, layering and other methods, among which cuttings are the main method of propagation.

Precautions for raising five-color plum

Five-color plum is poisonous

Although the five-color plum can be used as medicine, it is toxic. Taking it internally may cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, etc. The dosage must be controlled to prevent adverse reactions. Pregnant women and the weak should not use it.

Five-color plum has a bad smell

The branches, leaves and flowers of the five-color plum emit a smell that is sensitive to mosquitoes and flies, which has a strong effect in repelling mosquitoes and flies, and the smell is harmless to the human body.

It not only has a good effect in repelling mosquitoes and flies, but also has bright and varied colors. It is known as the "seven-change mosquito repellent flower" and has the dual functions of repelling mosquitoes and flies and beautifying the courtyard.

Pay attention to pruning five-color plum

Like bougainvillea, the five-color plum needs to be pruned to maintain its beautiful shape and keep the flowers blooming. The five-color plum tree is resistant to pruning, and to make it have a beautiful round crown, it needs to be topped frequently. When the seedlings grow to about 10 cm in height, pinch off the top to encourage them to sprout branches from the base. Keep 3 to 5 branches as main branches. Pinch off the top again when the main branches grow to a certain length to ensure balanced growth of the main branches.
