Cultivation methods and precautions of King Protea

How to grow king protea

soil

The soil for growing king protea needs to have good drainage, especially for seedlings. If the soil in the pot is compacted, the seedlings will find it difficult to grow. Sandy soil is best for growing king flowers. In home cultivation, you should also choose a slightly larger ceramic pot with good air permeability.

Temperature and light

Temperature: The wintering temperature of Protea is generally not lower than 7 degrees Celsius, and the summer temperature should be 27 degrees Celsius. Some varieties can withstand low temperatures and will not get frostbite even at zero degrees Celsius.

Light: King Protea prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight. Can be maintained in full sun. But it needs to be cool and dry in summer, and appropriate shade is needed during strong sunlight.

Water and fertilizer management

Watering: The Emperor Flower likes a dry environment, so watering is appropriate and there is no need to keep the soil in the pot moist. But pay attention to the adjustment of air humidity and spray water mist around the plants.

Fertilization: The nutrient requirements of the king protea are not very high. Applying fertilizer once in spring and autumn can meet its growth requirements.

Reproduction method

Sowing: It is usually carried out in autumn. Seeds mixed with new lipid film are sown. Keep them moist after sowing. Do not make them too wet after emergence. Keep them slightly dry. When a pair of true leaves appear, transplant them into pots and place them in a ventilated and well-lit place for maintenance.

Cuttings: Choose the mother plant of the king flower and cut the branches above the semi-lignified position as cuttings, retaining 4 to 6 leaves. The substrate is a mixture of peat and perlite in a volume ratio of 4:6, the pH value is adjusted to 5.5~6.5, and the EC value is less than 0.5. Soak the base of the cuttings in 1000 ppm indole-3-butyric acid solution for 15 minutes and then air-dry immediately. The cutting depth is 1/3~1/4 of the cutting length. After cutting, manage according to conventional techniques and transplant into the field after seedlings emerge.
