The difference between magnolia and yulan

The difference between magnolia and yulan

From the botanical point of view

1.Magnolia is a tall tree, while magnolia is a shrub or small tree. It is easy to distinguish from the plant shape.

2. The calyx and petals of magnolia are often inseparable, usually 9 in number, and there are horticultural varieties with as many as 12-15. However, the calyx and petals of magnolia are obviously different, with 3 sepals, which are evergreen lanceolate, and 6 petals, which are purple on the outside and white on the inside. This is the most obvious difference in the flowers.

3. The flowering period of magnolia is earlier than that of magnolia, but the flowering period varies in different regions, so this cannot be used as the sole basis.

Distinguished by the origin of the name

Ancient people referred to magnolia and yulan as mulan. History can prove that:

In the poem Li Sao, "In the morning I drink the dew from the magnolia, and in the evening I eat the fallen petals of the autumn chrysanthemum", magnolia and autumn chrysanthemum are mentioned together, which shows that they are in autumn. However, the leaves of magnolia and magnolia are very similar and cannot be distinguished.

The Qin Dynasty's "Chang'an Records" states that "Afang Palace used magnolia as beams and magnet as doors." This probably refers to magnolia. Magnolia is a tall deciduous tree, while magnolia is a shrub or small tree. The one that can be used as beams should be magnolia.

After the Ming Dynasty, magnolia is called magnolia, while mulan is mostly called xinyi. In the Ming Dynasty, Wang Shimao's "Xuepu Zashu" said, "Magnolia was earlier called xinyi, so people in Song Dynasty named it Yingchun, and it is still called this name in Guangdong today. It has thousands of stems and stamens, and flowers without leaves. When it is in full bloom, it can be called jade tree." Wang Xiangjin's "Qunfangpu" said, "Magnolia has nine petals, white with a slight green color, and its fragrance is like orchid, hence the name. It grows in clusters with one stem and one flower, all at the end of the tree, and there are no soft branches. It buds in midwinter and blooms in March. ... Use wood pens to send branches, and plant the body and the wood pens together, and connect them in autumn." Here, wood pens refer to magnolia. The Qing Dynasty's "Illustrated Catalogue of Plant Names and Realities" states that "Xinyi is the flower of the woodbrush, and Yulan is the forsythia. As for the woodbrush and forsythia, there are two kinds: the woodbrush is purple, and the forsythia is white; the woodbrush grows in clusters and blooms in February, while the forsythia grows tall and blooms at the beginning of spring." "Forsythia is its original name, and the local gossipers call it Yulan because of its beautiful flowers."

Distinguish from their respective aliases

Other names of magnolia include jade tree, Wangchun, white magnolia, Yingchun, Yingchun, Yutangchun, etc.

Magnolia (Magnolia) is also known as Linlan, Guilan, Dulan, Magnolia, Wood Pen, Yellow Heart, Purple Magnolia, and Girl Flower.

The name Mulan still has different meanings today. In flora, magnolia is often distinguished from magnolia, or magnolia is distinguished from magnolia, and magnolia is also known as magnolia/purple magnolia. There are those who can distinguish it, and there are those who abuse it. The flower buds of both can be used as medicine. Some people mix them up. Magnolia is warm in nature and pungent in taste, while magnolia is pungent, warm, fragrant and dispersing in nature. However, their medicinal uses are different and they should not be mixed.
