In the poem Li Sao, "In the morning I drink the dew from the magnolia, and in the evening I eat the fallen petals of the autumn chrysanthemum", magnolia and autumn chrysanthemum are mentioned together, which shows that they are in autumn. However, the leaves of magnolia and magnolia are very similar and cannot be distinguished.

The Qing Dynasty's "Illustrated Catalogue of Plant Names and Realities" states that "Xinyi is the flower of the woodbrush, and Yulan is the forsythia. As for the woodbrush and forsythia, there are two kinds: the woodbrush is purple, and the forsythia is white; the woodbrush grows in clusters and blooms in February, while the forsythia grows tall and blooms at the beginning of spring." "Forsythia is its original name, and the local gossipers call it Yulan because of its beautiful flowers."
