How to grow jasmine

Pot soil

Jasmine potted plants require soil that is rich in organic matter and has good air permeability and ventilation. Fertile, slightly acidic sandy soil can be used.

Fertilization

Jasmine likes fertilizer, so the potting soil should maintain sufficient fertility.

The high temperature of summer is the peak growth period of jasmine. At this time, more fertilizer should be applied to it, and it needs to be fertilized twice a month. If the jasmine has lush branches and buds but does not bloom in summer, it is because too much fertilizer has been applied, causing the plant to grow too tall. In this case, you should control water and apply fertilizer to make it bud in time. At the same time, you should pay attention to moving the jasmine to a place with sufficient sunlight and good ventilation for cultivation.

Watering

Jasmine is not drought-tolerant, so it needs to be watered more often. However, during the hot summer months, be careful not to allow water to accumulate in the pot, otherwise it will cause root rot. During the rainy season, the pots should be emptied in time to prevent water accumulation. During the hot summer months, water the plants once in the morning and evening every day. If you find that the leaves are curling, you need to spray water on them in time to promote growth and development.

illumination

Jasmine likes to grow in a humid and warm environment with plenty of sunlight. Jasmine is relatively afraid of cold. Jasmine in the south can overwinter directly outdoors, but those in the north need to be kept warm and placed in potted plants facing south in winter.

If the light is strong, the leaves of jasmine will be dark green, the branches will be thick, and the flowers will be well colored and have a strong fragrance.

Reproduction method

There are three general propagation methods for domestic jasmine: cuttings, layering, and division.

For cuttings, choose mature one-year-old branches, cut them into 10 cm long, remove the lower leaves, and leave a pair of complete leaves on the top. Insert them into a bed with equal amounts of mud and sand, cover with plastic film, and maintain a high air humidity.

For layering, choose longer branches, make a slight cut at 15 cm, preferably below the node, and bury them in a pot filled with sand or mud. Keep them moist. They will begin to take root after 2 to 3 weeks, and will be separated from the mother plant to become seedlings after about 2 months.

Division can be combined with repotting in the spring of each year. Jasmine plants with dense branches can be separated and potted separately. When dividing, the roots and above-ground branches and leaves should be properly trimmed.

Jasmine cultivation precautions

Plastic pruning

Jasmine grows very fast in summer and needs to be pruned in time.

When pruning potted jasmine, keep 10 to 15 cm at the base to promote the growth of many strong new shoots. If the new shoots grow very vigorously, they should be pinched when they grow to 10 cm to promote secondary shoots. This will produce more flowers and a compact plant shape. After the flowers wither, the branches should be cut off in time to reduce nutrient consumption and promote the growth of new shoots, making the jasmine branches dense, with more buds and flowers.

Common pests

Common pests of jasmine include: double-striped horn borer, jasmine leaf borer, citrus gray weevil, red spider mites, etc.

These pests generally feed on leaves, twigs, flowers and fruits, which are extremely harmful to the growth of jasmine plants. Everyone must take more precautions during the maintenance process. You can use all-purpose powder or pyrethroids mixed with 200 times water for spraying. Spray once every half a month. Even if no diseases or pests occur, spraying should be carried out to prevent them first. The best time for spraying is 9 am and 4 pm on sunny days.

Jasmine Care FAQs

1. The problem of Jiashan Night Rain

The jasmine flowers have been sprouting for a month, but the buds are not growing anymore. What’s going on?

Editor’s answer: If the new sprouts rot, then the roots will rot and die; if it just grows slowly, it needs more sunlight.

2. Problems with Yunyun 519

The leaves of the newly bought jasmine flowers occasionally become listless and shrunken. What is going on?

Editor’s answer: Newly bought flowers cannot be fertilized, as too much fertilizer will cause heat and burn the roots. You should water more often to allow some of the fertilizer to be lost with the water. If it still doesn't return, you can change the soil and replant it.

3. Stozl's Problem

The plant gets sunlight before 10am and the soil is moist, but the new buds of the jasmine flowers are a little bent. What's going on?

Editor’s answer: New branches are delicate, and the roots may be damaged when they are divided into pots, resulting in an imbalance in the supply and demand of the root system. This problem will be alleviated after growing for a period of time.

4. jf06054082's question

The weather has been hot recently, and the flowers are not exposed to direct sunlight, but there is always scattered light. What should I do if the jasmine leaves are turning yellow?

Editor’s answer: In this case, water should be strictly controlled, do not water too much, and fertilize should be suspended. Remove dead leaves and dried branches and wait for it to regrow. The potting soil should be replaced with sandy soil with good air permeability.

5. Problems for people studying plants
