Cabbage is a widely grown vegetable that can be found in both the south and the north. Despite its affordable market price, demand for it remains steady. The key to achieving high yield of cabbage is to master the correct planting techniques. Let’s learn the whole process of growing Chinese cabbage. 1. Sowing time It is recommended to sow early-maturing varieties after mid-August, while mid-maturing varieties are suitable for planting in late August to early September. 2. Seed selection Choosing high-quality seeds is the cornerstone of ensuring a good harvest of Chinese cabbage. You should choose high-quality varieties with strong disease resistance, suitable maturity period, good stress resistance, and full and uniform grains. 3. Sowing method Use the spot sowing method, sow two seeds in each hole, cover the soil and water. The seeds germinate after about 5 days, and thinning begins after 7 days, keeping one healthy seedling in each hole. If seedling transplanting is adopted, sow one seed in each culture hole, cover with soil, water it and place it in a cool place. It will germinate after 5 days and can be transplanted after 7 days. 4. Thinning and weeding When the cabbage grows three leaves, the first thinning and weeding is carried out; the second thinning is carried out when it has six leaves, and the seedlings are determined after eight leaves, keeping one strong seedling in each hole. 5. Fertilization Start applying top dressing half a month after planting, once every 9 days or so, for a total of 4-5 times. Stop fertilizing one week before harvest. Nitrogen fertilizer is applied during the rosette stage, and ammonia fertilizer is mainly applied during the heading stage, with nitrogen fertilizer applied as an auxiliary. 6. Loosening the soil and weeding Carry out soil scarification and weeding three times throughout the growing season. In the middle period, cake fertilizer can be applied in the furrows, and soil can be built up to form ridges with a height of about 12 cm. 7. Irrigation During the seedling stage, follow the principle of small amounts of irrigation and multiple times to keep the soil moist. Intermittent irrigation is adopted during the rosette stage, and the water requirement increases during the heading stage. Irrigation should be carried out in time when the soil is dry. The best time for irrigation is in the evening or at night when the temperature drops. 8. Pest and disease control Common diseases of Chinese cabbage include downy mildew, black rot, viral diseases and white spot disease. Drugs such as mancozeb , ethylene phosphine aluminum, and carbendazim can be used for prevention and control. In summary, cabbage is usually planted in August. Choose suitable land and apply sufficient base fertilizer. Lime can be added when digging trenches to enhance soil fertility and reduce the occurrence of diseases.
