Why doesn’t Kalanchoe bloom?

Why doesn’t Kalanchoe bloom?

In the process of caring for Kalanchoe , flower lovers may encounter some common problems, such as the plant not blooming, or the plant and leaves gradually becoming smaller. Let’s find out why Kalanchoe doesn’t bloom.

1. Lighting issues

Kalanchoe is a short-day plant that requires specific light conditions to promote flower bud differentiation. Giving it 4 to 6 hours of light a day and shading it for the rest of the time can stimulate flower bud growth. If the Kalanchoe receives more than 8 hours of full sun, it may not bloom and will only produce leaves. Ensuring that the Kalanchoe receives the proper amount of light is key to promoting its flowering.

2. Fertilizer problem

Plants need adequate nutrients, especially phosphorus and potassium, to grow and bloom. If only nitrogen fertilizer is used for a long time, it will cause the plant to grow excessive leaves without blooming. The correct approach is to use fertilizers rich in phosphorus and potassium to promote the formation of flower buds and the opening of flowers. If a specialized phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is not available, using a balanced multi-element fertilizer is also an option, but the amount of flowering may be reduced.

3. Temperature problem

Suitable temperature is essential for the growth and flowering of Kalanchoe. If the temperature is too low, below 10 degrees Celsius, the plant will grow very slowly and is unlikely to flower. To ensure the growth and flowering of Kalanchoe, the temperature should be kept at around 15 degrees Celsius. Too high a temperature, exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, can also cause the plant to enter a dormant state, affecting its growth.

4. In addition to the above three main reasons, there are some other factors that need attention:

Kalanchoe requires loose, breathable and nutrient-rich soil. When watering, you should follow the principle of "water thoroughly when dry" to avoid the soil from drying out completely to avoid damaging the root system. Good ventilation helps prevent pests and diseases and promotes plant health.

In short, Kalanchoe can bloom beautiful flowers every year, and can even bloom two or three times a year. If you encounter a situation where the plant does not bloom, check whether the above factors are the cause.
