Can calamus be grown hydroponically?

Can it be hydroponically grown?

The plant of calamus essentially likes shade and moisture. From this point of view, it is better to grow it in water than in mud. Most of the indoor ornamental plants are grown in water. As long as the water does not dry up, its lifespan can reach decades.

Hydroponics Method

Acorus with large old roots is suitable as the target material for hydroponics. It is best if the old roots are higher than the mud surface and meander like a dragon. The scattered small calamus plants can be gathered into a ball, wrapped with palm bark and placed in a basin of water. However, the roots of small calamus plants are very short, so you can use enameled wire to string them together. It should be noted that the old roots should not be damaged, and then the enameled wire should be wrapped around them several times.

When cultivating, you can choose a medium-depth, waterproof flower container according to personal preference and the size of the plant. Wash the calamus stems, trim off old roots and excessively long roots, soak them in potassium permanganate solution for 2 hours to sterilize and disinfect them, fill the pot with pebbles while fixing the plant in the pot, and make sure the horizontal surface touches the roots. Do not soak the leaves. Finally, place it in a well-lit place but avoid exposure to sunlight.

Hydroponics post-maintenance

In the daily maintenance of hydroponic calamus, in addition to timely replenishing water, you should regularly add a small amount of flower fertilizer to the water to supplement nutrients, which can promote its lush growth. Acorus is cold-resistant, so in winter you just need to clean up the dead branches and leaves. In the hot summer, the calamus water basin should be placed in the shade of the flowers to avoid water evaporation and excessive consumption of nutrients.
