Cultivation methods and precautions of fragrant wood

The fragrant wood is a very drought-resistant plant with a well-developed root system. It is very suitable for cultivation for people who do not have much time. It has a beautiful tree shape and a pleasant smell. It is said to have the effect of repelling mosquitoes and flies. It does not require too much time to take care of. Let’s talk about the cultivation methods and precautions of the fragrant wood.

1. Soil selection

To make the soil loose, breathable and well-drained, you can use two parts of leaf mold or peat soil, one part of garden soil, and one part of coarse sand and mix them evenly for cultivation.

2. Watering

The principle of watering the fragrant wood is not to water it unless it is dry, and if you do need to water it thoroughly, its potting soil cannot accumulate water for a long time, and it cannot be watered if there is water in the tray. If there is a lot of rain in the season, the tray at the bottom of the pot should be removed, or it should be moved away from the place where it rains. The fragrant wood's potting soil will easily turn yellow and fall off, or even die due to long-term dampness. Try to water it less in winter to avoid frost damage caused by excessively cold weather and excessively wet potting soil. If the potting soil of the fragrant wood is too dry in winter, water it less at noon when the weather is sunny and the temperature is high, so that the potting soil is a little moist.

3. Lighting

Fragrant wood is a sun-loving plant. It should be placed in a sunny place for maintenance in spring, autumn and winter, and properly shaded in summer. If it is placed in a place without light for a long time, it is easy to lose leaves and become sick.

4. Fertilization

Fragrant wood is not a fertilizer-loving plant. When the temperature is around 20 degrees in spring and autumn, apply compound fertilizer once every 20 days or so. No fertilizer is needed at other times. Do not give too much fertilizer as it may cause fertilizer damage.

5. Pruning

The fragrant wood needs to be pruned regularly to remove dense branches, overgrown branches, and diseased branches so that it can maintain a good shape.

6. Reproduction

The main propagation methods of Fragrant Wood are cuttings and sowing. First, the sowing method: when the seeds begin to show signs of maturity, collect the seeds from the tree in time. The seeds of the fragrant wood are wrapped in juicy flesh and are easily contaminated and moldy. The collected seeds must be immediately piled up for fermentation, the peels are crushed, and they are washed in water and stored in a ventilated and dry place. Seeds can be sown in spring and autumn, and the germination rate of autumn sowing is generally higher than that of spring sowing. Before sowing, soak the selected seeds in warm water with an initial temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius for 24 hours. The seeds absorb water and swell. Take them out and place them in warm and humid conditions for germination and sowing. Second, cuttings: Fragrant wood can be propagated by cuttings in spring and autumn. During the dormant period of the tree, select one-year-old strong branches from mature mother trees and cut them into 10-15 cm long cuttings. The upper cut should be 1-1.5 cm away from the bud and the lower cut should be 0.3-0.5 cm away from the bud. The cutting medium should be selected with good permeability, medium water holding capacity, and neutral or slightly acidic soil value. Before cutting, the substrate must be disinfected. Dip the base of the cuttings in rooting powder (refer to the instructions for use). The immersion time is 12-24 hours. Dig trenches and plant the cuttings, inserting them about 2/3 into the soil. Cover with plastic film after planting to increase the air humidity. Careful management is required before rooting, which will begin in about 45 days.

7. Temperature

The fragrant wood is a positive tree, but is also slightly shade-tolerant. It likes warmth, requires a deep soil layer, has strong germination ability, grows slowly, and has a long lifespan, but its seedlings are not very cold-resistant and need to be protected in North China. The plant can withstand low temperatures of -10°C and prefers soil with sufficient sunlight and little water accumulation.

8. Pests and diseases

Fragrant wood is prone to red spider mites, scale insects, black spot disease, etc., which can be treated by spraying special medicine.
