When and how to sow Verbena

When and how to sow Verbena

1. Sowing time

Verbena grows best in a warm environment with sufficient light, so the sowing time is generally in spring and autumn, when the climate is conducive to seed germination and seedling development. Although the plants can bloom during high temperatures, the seedlings may still be sunburned. In winter, the lower temperature affects germination after sowing.

2. Seed selection and germination

The germination rate of petunia seeds is not high, usually around 50%. If you want to increase the germination rate, you need to select seeds and germinate them. Select seeds with larger grains, place them in a sealed bag, and refrigerate them for a week to allow them to vernalize. Then place it on a wet paper towel, spray it with water appropriately, place it in a dark place, and wait for the seeds to turn white before you can sow them.

3. Soil Preparation

Verbena is not very demanding on soil and can grow in many places, but if you want it to grow well, it needs to be planted in loose, fertile, neutral soil. It is usually prepared with a mixture of garden soil and coarse sand. Good drainage and air permeability are particularly important, which is conducive to root growth and breathing. If the soil is too heavy, it will affect the development of the plants.

4. Sowing

Sprinkle the petunia seeds on the soil surface, water appropriately to keep the soil slightly moist, and then cover it with a thin layer of soil. The soil should not be too moist, as this will inhibit germination. After sowing, place them in a dark place and keep the temperature at around 15-17℃. They will germinate after two to three weeks. When it grows to a certain height, it can be exposed to light and fertilized appropriately.
