Can you fertilize azalea during its flowering period? When should you fertilize azalea?

1. Can fertilizer be applied?

Do not fertilize azaleas during their flowering period. Before flowering, azalea has accumulated enough nutrients. If you continue to fertilize the plant, it may not be absorbed. The accumulation of fertilizer at this time may damage the roots. It will also shorten the flowering period, cause unopened flower buds to fall off, and so on.

2. Fertilization time

1. Spring: Spring is the growing season of azalea and also an important period for flowering. At this time, you should choose dilute cake fertilizer water, which can provide rich nutrients. At the same time, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers before flowering, which can make the flowers larger and more numerous.

2. Summer: In summer, azaleas will enter a semi-dormant state, and it is not suitable to apply fertilizer at this time. However, it is necessary to add some nitrogen fertilizer in time after the flowers fall, which can effectively increase the nutrients lost due to flowering.

3. Autumn: Autumn is the second growing period of azalea, and it is also the stage of flower bud differentiation. At this time, use a compound fertilizer mainly composed of phosphorus and potassium. Whether the fertilizer is sufficient will determine the flowering situation in the second year. Of course, the fertilizer should not be too concentrated. It should be applied once every 7 days, and be sure to water it the next day to dilute it.

4. Winter: The low temperatures in winter will also cause the plant to enter a dormant period, so it is not advisable to apply fertilizer. But it should be applied once before winter to help it survive the winter safely.
